Joni Mitchell, le « Blue » de la cinquantaine

Blue, l’album sommet de la première période de Joni Mitchell, fête ses cinquante ans en 2021 avec un EP digital suivi d’un coffret monumental à paraître cet automne. 

Faites de la place sur vos étagères ! Cru exceptionnel, l’année discographique 1971 fait l’objet de  luxueuses (et volumineuses) rééditions 50ème anniversaire. Après Crosby Still Nash & Young (Déjà Vu), John Lennon (Imagine) et en attendant les Beach Boys (Surf’s Up) et George Harrison (All Things Must Pass), Blue, l’un des multiples chefs-d’œuvre de Joni Mitchell, passe à son tour la barre du demi-siècle.

Rhino démarre cette célébration avec la sortie de Blue 50 (Demos & Outtakes), un EP digital dévoilant cinq titres inédits enregistrés pendant la création de Blue. Celui-ci contient la démo de “California” et une version de travail de “A Case Of You” comprenant des paroles différentes. Cet EP contient deux versions alternatives, celle de “River” incluant une partie de cor, contrairement à la version album interprétée en piano solo, et une prise différente de “Urge For Going”. Joni Mitchell avait écrit cette chanson au milieu des années 1960 et la jouait souvent sur scène. Cette chanson a été revisitée lors des séances de Blue avec l’ajout de cordes et diffère de la version publiée en face-B du single “You Turn Me On, I’m A Radio” paru en 1972. Le dernier titre de cet EP est l’enregistrement studio de “Hunter”, un titre écarté du tracklisting de Blue à la dernière minute qui sera joué sur scène, mais jamais publié de manière officielle sur disque.

Ces cinq titres seront inclus dans Joni Mitchell Archives Vol. 2: The Reprise Years (1968-1971), qui paraîtra le 29 octobre en versions 5-CD, digitale et coffret 10-LP 180-grammes limité à 4000 exemplaires exclusivement sur www.JoniMitchell.com. Les titres d’Archives Vol. 2 sont séquencés chronologiquement afin de suivre en temps réel l’évolution creative de Joni Mitchell au cours d’une des périodes les plus prolifiques de sa carrière. Ce coffret propose plusieurs compositions originales inédites de Joni Mitchell, dont “Jesus”, enregistré en 1969 dans l’appartement New-yorkais de son amie Jane Lurie situé dans le quartier Chelsea, et qui inspirera la chanson “Chelsea Morning.”

Le concert donné à L’Hibou Coffee House d’Ottawa (et enregistré par Jimi Hendrix !) le 19 mars 1968 et la performance du Paris Theatre de Londres le 29 octobre 1970 font partie des temps forts de ce coffret. Diffusé par la BBC, celui-ci contient plusieurs titres qui allaient paraître sur Blue l’année suivante : “Carey”, “River” et “My Old Man.” Joni Mitchell est accompagnée par le singer-songwriter James Taylor au cours de la deuxième partie du concert.

Parmi les autres trésors d’Archives Vol. 2 figure le concert intégral de Joni Mitchell au Carnegie Hall enregistré le 1er février 1969, quelques mois avant la sortie de son deuxième album Clouds. À l’instar de ses prédécesseurs, Archives Vol. 2 sera accompagné d’un livret illustré par de nombreuses photos inédites tirées de la collection personnelle de Joni Mitchell et d’un entretien avec l’auteur/réalisateur Cameron Crowe.
